SERANGOON GARDEN URBAN VILLAGES

Urban Villages in Singapore are primarily low-rise, small-scale developments with eateries and shops. These localities have “village-like” qualities that give them a distinct character and buzz. Such places have strong character and identity that is appealing to a wide spectrum of people.

In 2002, the Identity Plan was introduced to strengthen and preserve such localities, and 15 areas were identified to safeguard and enhance their respective characters. In the Draft Master Plan, we have identified three new identity nodes which are Holland Village, Serangoon Garden and Jalan Kayu.

Serangoon Garden, a well-established private housing estate developed in the 1950s, is today a favourite food haunt renowned for the stalwart Chomp Chomp Food Centre and numerous eateries around Serangoon Garden Circus.

Older Singaporeans used to call Serangoon Garden by its Hokkien name “Ang Sar Lee”, referring to the red zinc roofs of the houses that occupied this estate. The circus, which is a unique feature and a landmark of this estate, will be retained as a key identity marker.

New Street Block Plans will also guide developments here to ensure that the estate retains its character and charm.

These popular enclaves are well known for their distinctive characters. Some of the strategies to retain and enhance their unique qualities will include new guidelines to ensure sensitive, complementary developments, additional car parking and environmental improvements.

NEW JOBS AND GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES AT HAND

The North-East is a region that enjoys a good mix of retail, office and other employment spaces. As part of our plans to bring jobs closer to homes, office, retail, industrial and other business spaces in the North-East will grow, providing skilled employment options as well as greater convenience for residents.

LORONG HALUS & DEFU INDUSTRIAL PARKS

Lorong Halus will be Singapore’s first industrial park built on a former landfill site and will be sensitively designed to incorporate greenery. The new Defu will be pedestrian-centric with a continuous, linear green spine that weaves through the industrial park. The green spine will also be an enjoyable route for walking and cycling, with landscaped greenery and environmentally sustainable features.
